About Solebury

Colonial History
With its miles of Delaware river-front, rolling hills, meandering country lanes and landmark farms and estates, the 27.2 square miles of Solebury Township is one of Bucks Countys most desirable communities to live in, and offers some of its most appealing beautiful real estate. Once the ancient home of the Lenni Lenape Indians, the area that is now called Solebury was originally part of William Penns land grant. Prosperous Quaker farmers settled here and built their finely-crafted stone Meeting House and School Masters house that still stand today as proud testaments to the early residents concern for quality of life and substance in their community.

During the Revolutionary War, George Washington and his troops rested at the Thompson Neeley house, another surviving historic architectural treasure on the River Road, just before making their historic crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas morning in 1776. The 19th century attracted many new residents who found work in a series of mills that harnessed the power of the many streams to grind corn and grains, cut lumber, spin textiles and produce paper. Later, artists like Redfield, Garber, Coppedge and Lathrop discovered the beauty of the country side and the tiny villages including Phillips Mill, Centre Bridge, Carversville, Cuttalossa and Lumberville, creating timeless paintings of local landscapes that now grace the walls of museums and private collections.

Solebury Today
Today, Solebury retains many of its old stone farm houses & fields, meadows and woods thanks to a far-sighted and ambitious preservation effort. Unlike some neighboring communities, there is limited new construction in Solebury except for the occasional minor subdivision or small development of high-end homes. In general, Solebury Twp. properties are highly valued and in high demand.

While retaining a gentle, rural nature, however, Solebury with its 9,159 residents, does not want for sophistication, convenience and outdoor activities. The community boasts restaurants offering fine dining, world-class bed & breakfasts and inns, cute-as-a-button general stores, antique shops, a traditional shopping center and professional center. In addition, part of the delightful shopping destination known as Peddlers Village, resides within the borders of Solebury Township. For the outdoor enthusiasts, there are canal tow-paths to bike or jog, river canoeing, kayaking and rafting, equestrian opportunities or simply apple or strawberry picking. Be sure to drive slowly on our country roads and look out for wildlife, cyclists, and plen air artists. Many a visitor has become so enchanted by Soleburys charm they become new residents.
